Using a Random Number Table

This is a random number table. To use it we must first know how many individuals are in our sample frame, or comprehensive list of possible respondents.

If there are 99 or less, then we will use the table two digits at a time, if the list contains more than 99 up to 999,

we will use three digits at a time.

Steps in using the table

Lets assume we are taking a sample from a list with 75 individuals on it. Begin by closing your eyes and

dropping your pencil anywhere on the page. From there you will move across the table in two digit segments.

Any numbers not between 01 and 75 will be discarded. The circled two digit numbers in the illustration below

would result in the selection of numbers 33, 48, 63, and 20 with 83 being discarded because there is no 83 on the list to select.
