Diagnosis and Treatment

The Student Health Center has a full array of services that are available to enrolled HSU students. For health problems that go beyond our scope, we refer students to appropriate off-campus services.

Women's Health and Preventative Care

The HSU Student Health Center provides the following wellness and preventative services:

• Information and counseling in a safe, confidential setting;
• Annual exams including: PAP smears, breast exams, and health screening;
• Evaluation and treatment of gynecologic problems;
• Contraceptive choices including: birth control pills, male and female condoms, diaphragms, Depo Provera, Emergency Contraception ("The Morning After Pill");
• Pregnancy testing;
• Screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STI's);
• HIV testing;
• Referral for free mammograms for eligible women;
• Family planning methods for females and males.
• Family PACT (Teal Card) Services

Immunizations and Skin Testing for Tuberculosis

The Student Health Center offers a variety of immunizations for travel and to help prevent diseases which might interfere with your academic program or impact your overall health. The following is a list of available vaccines:

• MMR (Measles, mumps, and rubella). See Immunization Requirements for new students;
• Hepatitis B: See Immunization Requirements for new students;
• Hepatitis A: 2 shots over 6 months, recommended for travel Immunization Requirements for new students;
• Td (Tetanus and diphtheria) and Tdap (adult Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis): Should be updated every 5-10 years;
• Menactra (Meningococcal): Advised especially for those living in student housing. Provides protection for at least 3 years;
• Typhoid: Recommended for students traveling to foreign countries. *Please request an appointment by calling (707)826-3146. Additional charge may be applied;
• Flu (Influenza): Currently recommended for "high risk" students, i.e. those that are asthmatic, diabetic, immuno-compromised, or over the age of 50. Available from October - January;
• PPD (Tuberculosis): A skin test that tests for the presence of antibodies to the tuberculin bacillus. A small amount of the purified protein derivative is injected into the top few layers of skin. The injection site is inspected 48-72 hours later for possible redness and/or swelling;
• HPV (Human Papilloma Virus): a series of three vaccines recommended for young women. Cost is approximately $120.00 per dose.

Laboratory Services

The Student Health Center laboratory offers a range of services in a compassionate environment. We are dedicated to providing accurate and timely testing to our patients. In addition to performing testing upon health center providers' orders, we also welcome outside provider orders.

Our in-house test menu includes complete blood count, urinalysis and culture, pregnancy, strep throat, infectious mononucleosis and gonorrhea, which are covered by the student services fee. For information about other tests, please call (707)826-3146.

X-Ray Services

The Student Health Center X-ray department provides all general radiographic exams including:

• Extremities (upper and lower)
• Spine (complete)
• Chest and ribs
• Skull (sinuses, facial, etc.)
• Abdomen

Psychiatry

Dr. Irv Tessler is available one afternoon per week on a consultation basis by referral from the Student Health Center or Counseling and Psychological Services.

Nutrition & Dietary Counseling

The Student Health Center employs a part-time Registered Dietitian who is available on referral from the Student Health and Counseling Center for consultation on eating disorders and other limited problems. Please call (707)826-3146 for questions or to request an appointment.

Pharmacy

The Student Health Center Pharmacy offers prescription and non-prescription products at reduced costs to HSU students. Information on prescription medications, herbal products and nutritional supplements are available. Drug interaction screening is performed as prescriptions are filled. Many outside prescriptions accepted, call 826-5043.

Medical Referrals

Medical referrals provide assistance to students who have been evaluated at the Student Health Center and need more advanced testing or consultation with a specialist. Medical referrals provide the following services for students:

• Staff are available to assist students in finding appropriate specialty care in the area.
• Effort to contact private health insurance companies to discuss benefits available to the student.
• Extensive knowledge of medical insurance practices and assistance to students who are having difficulties with their insurance carrier.
• Familiarity with local medical community resources and the level of student satisfaction with the community's medical providers.
