Service Learning and the Campus Strategic Plan

The Humboldt State University Strategic Plan for 2004-2009 clarifies a vision for this university to "be renowned for social and environmental responsibility and action." To achieve this vision, the campus strategic plan sets a goal of "develop[ing] a well-defined, signature All-University Curriculum that incorporates the development of strong skills, interdisciplinary experiences, and service / experiential learning."

Service Learning/Experiential Education Advisory Committee

The Service Learning/Experiential Education (SL/EE) Advisory Committee works to make the vision and goal of the campus strategic plan a reality. SL/EE is a university committee that reports directly to both the Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs and the Vice-President of Student Affairs, and the committee has been working since Fall Semester 1998 to increase support for service learning and experiential education across campus. The SL/EE committee includes representatives from each college, the student body, the community, and staff from Student Affairs, Undergraduate Affairs, the Career Center, plus the Faculty Development Coordinator and the Service Learning/Experiential Education Coordinator. The committee was created as a result of the unanimous passage of the Service Learning Initiative by the Academic Senate in 1995. The initiative is based on recommendations from the University Curriculum Committee and includes a mandate to develop guidelines for courses that utilize service learning in order to meet community-identified needs while developing critical thinking skills, a commitment to values, and skills for effective citizenship.
