FAQ'S About HSU SWE

What is Humboldt State SWE?

The Society of Women Engineers student section at Humboldt State University is a student organization dedicated to promoting women in the technical fields of science and engineering. We accomplish this by being involved in many activities. We are involved with the Bloomfield Elementary School science fair, the Humboldt County science fair, the Expanding Your Horizons outreach to 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls, and much more.

How to join?

To join the Humboldt State University section of SWE, simply fill out an application. The application indicates where to mail your annual fee of $20. Some of this money is sent to the section you will join. The application can also be found at the website for the national SWE organization. There is now an online application on the national SWE website for your convience.

When and Where are meetings?

Weekly meetings are held on the Humboldt State University campus. The date, time and location change each semester to accommodate the most members. During the Fall 2003 semester the meetings are in Science D, Room 23, at 1:00 pm every Wednesday

What happens at the meetings?

The meetings are where we come up with ideas for outreach activities and make progress towards planning events. There are also many announcements made about job opportunities or local volunteer activities. Also, a member of another student engineering club, the Environmental Resources Engineering Student Association (ERESA), is often present to inform us of their planned activities.

What are the advantages of joining SWE?

Joining SWE is a great way to meet new people. However, there are specific benefits unique to Humboldt State University SWE. Because of a generous grant from Fugitsu, SWE owns a laptop and camera that any SWE member can check out for school research purposes. SWE members can also attend the regional and national SWE conferences. Both of these conferences have a career fair where SWE members can search for jobs. More benefits of joining SWE are indicated on the national SWE website.

What does a SWE member do?

There are various officer positions which SWE members are voted in to. These include President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Web Master, Equipment Manager, Historian, and Publicist. These officers have duties associated with their position. However, each member of SWE is often involved in activities, as much as their schedule permits. Most members are interested in the outreach activities for elementary, junior high, and high school students. Some members will participate in community service projects or other activities that increase the participation of SWE in our community.
