Voices of The People

Welcome to the Monograph page for Team E of Professor Tom Gage's English 426 class. As a culminating effort for the semester, we have compiled a monograph by combining our various voices centered around a central theme--The Bayshore Mall. It is through these various voices that we hope to explore not only the many ramifications of the mall on our local economy, but also the iconic mall as it pertains to American culture. Our voices follow a progression of sorts, moving through the various modes of discourse that we have looked at this semester. In the beginning, Dawn contributes with carefully gathered empirical data, and thus falls into the recording mode. Agnes then carries the voice into the reporting mode, showing us a unique perspective on the mall concept from the eyes of a foreign-born consumer. Amy and Matt's pieces reflect the recollection mode by looking back in time to retell very divergent viewpoints on the same Bayshore Mall theme by recounting the voices of others whose lives have been impacted by the mall. Mike's section moves more into the theorizing mode, by attempting to show that the archetypal mall has more impact on our culture than we may realize. Though the modes of our discourse vary somewhat, they all circle around the unifying issue of malls in general, and the Bayshore Mall specifically.

It is our belief that people by their very nature speak in different modes as conditions and situations warrant, and what better place is there to hear a variety of these voices than at a mall? Please join us by taking a "cyber stroll" of sorts through the Bayshore Mall, listening to the voices of the people.

To begin your cyber stroll through our "virtual" Bayshore Mall, click on the image above. As you walk, listen to the different people and you may begin to get a better sense of the Bayshore Mall, and the many functions of malls in American culture.
