and Additional Information

The Application Packet

Orientation meetings are held on campus in October/November to assist you in the application process. Application packets are available at these meetings. For dates, times, and places of these meetings call (707) 826-5870 or -5867. If you live a considerable distance from campus, request a packet by mail.

Complete and return two complete admission packets (one permanent file copy and a photocopy to travel to the subject area committee and the interviewing school district) to:
Secondary Education (SED)
Harry Griffith Hall 202,
Humboldt State University
Arcata CA 95521-9905

For forms in a hurry, our fax number is (707) 826-5868. Do not fax your entire application.

Arrange materials in your packets in the following order, and use this as a checkoff to ensure your packets are complete. Incomplete packets will not be accepted.
_____ Appeal packet for low GPA (if needed)
_____ Database Information (form 1)
_____ Transcripts for all college work, to include fall grades. (The summary of transferable units appearing at the beginning of HSU transcripts is not sufficient.) Transcripts can be unofficial or photocopies (or copies of fall grade reports). These are in addition to any transcripts you submit to Admissions when applying separately to HSU.
_____ Subject Matter Preparation (form 2)
_____ SSAT and Praxis* scores (if applicable, attach to form 2)
_____ Single Subject Supplement (form #3)
_____ Proof of passing CBEST* (attach to #3)
_____ Experiences/Skills (form 4)
_____ Early Field Experience (form 5)
_____ Professional Goal Statement (form 6)
_____ Three recommendations (form 7 plus letter for each), preferably from faculty, supervisors of early field experience, and public school educators
_____ Health Verification (form 8)

Be sure to confirm with HSU Admissions that they have received your postbaccalaureate application and any relevant transcripts.

Here's some advice regarding your separate postbaccalaureate application to Admissions. If your most recent college work was at HSU, your official transcripts are already here--there is no need to pay for new ones. (Applicants from other schools, however, will need to arrange for HSU Admissions to receive official transcripts from all colleges attended.) Also, there is no need to attach additional recommendation letters or another professional goal statement to the postbaccalaureate application. A one-sentence Statement of Purpose is sufficient on form B, question 20.

* Pass the CBEST and, if applicable, the SSAT/Praxis exams as early as possible. California college testing centers have registration information. Arrange to have scores sent directly to HSU. Libraries, bookstores, and the testing companies themselves have materials to help you prepare. Contact Humboldt¹s Testing Center to schedule a computerized CBEST sample test. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Additional Information

Deadlines

February 1 is the deadline for receipt of all application materials. The Admissions Office also has a February 1 deadline for receipt of postbaccalaureate applications to HSU's Teacher Preparation programs.

Subject Matter
Competency Assessment

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and the CSU Chancellor's Office require all credential candidates to pass subject matter competency assessment before student teaching. This is distinct from any assessment of subject knowledge handled through Praxis or SSAT exams.

At Humboldt, this assessment is administered by the subject-specific department. HSU also accepts assessment verification from CCTC-approved programs on other campuses.

You cannot begin spring semester student teaching without passing this assessment. In most cases, you can't even interview for a student teaching position or enter the fall SED courses without passing the competency assessment.

At Humboldt, competency assessment employs diverse measuring devices: oral interview, review of transcripts, writing proficiency exam, review of student portfolio. Some departments conduct free assessments, while others require small fees or registration in certain courses.

As soon as possible, contact the SED Coordinator and ask for the person who chairs the Subject Matter Competency Assessment in your subject area, both to introduce yourself and to become fully apprised of the requirements. Assessments are often handled during spring semester. Most departments require compelling reasons before they will reschedule an assessment for a later date.

Candidates who pass the assessments are ranked (in their subject areas) and assigned to interviews with potential master teachers. Candidates with minor deficiencies will sometimes be allowed to interview on the assumption that they will remedy the deficiencies in a timely manner. Candidates who fail the assessment receive advice on remedying their deficiencies.

It is your responsibility to find out specifics and time lines for subject matter competency assessment. If you have questions, contact the Secondary Education Program, Harry Griffith Hall 202, (707) 826-5108 or 826-5867.

Field Interview

Even if you have passed subject matter competency assessment and the University has accepted your postbaccalaureate application, you still are not officially a part of our program, eligible to take the SED courses, until a local school agrees to accept you as student teacher for the following year. The SED coordinator will arrange an interview for you with potential master teachers and/or school administrators.

Insurance / Clearance

The local school districts require that you show proof of professional liability insurance (minimum $200,000 coverage) to our office. Arrange this through membership in the Student California Teacher's Association (SCTA) or through a private insurer.

Obtain a Certificate of Clearance from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (unless you are already teaching with an emergency credential). Send forms and fingerprint cards (included in the application packet) directly to CTC with the appropriate fee. Fingerprinting is done at no charge by Humboldt's University Police.

Current Costs

If you wish to call HSU's financial aid office, the number is (707) 826-4321. Note: while loans and some scholarships are available, postbaccalaureate credential students are not eligible for graduate-level financial aid (such as the Cal Grant graduate fellowships).
