Applying for the Teaching Credential

----------------------------------------------------------------------

How does a candidate apply for the preliminary or professional clear credential?

Humboldt State's credential analyst will make a presentation to TPSS students during fall semester to explain the following procedures in detail.

All candidates pursuing a credential (preliminary or professional clear) must complete a credential check form and a Single Subject Clear Credential form before winter break. Failure to do so prevents the credential analyst from processing the application in a timely manner, which may prevent a student from being hired by a school district for the following year. Both forms are available in the Teacher Preparation office.

There is a filing fee for the credential. In addition, candidates must produce

a) the original Certificate of Clearance,

b) the original verification(s) of passing the CBEST, and

c) (if applicable) verification of passing the SSAT and/or Praxis subject area exams. (There may be additional CCTC fees when using test scores to qualify for a credential.)

Credential processing can take from three to five months. Once student teaching is completed and licensing paperwork and fees are on file, the credential analyst can prepare a letter verifying credential requirement completion that candidates can attach to job applications while awaiting their credentials.

How do teachers expand their credentials to teach additional subjects?

a) Pass the MSAT (for a multiple subjects credential) and/or pass the appropriate Praxis and SSAT exams in the desired single subject. Then contact the credential analyst for further procedures.

b) Obtain a supplementary authorization (press here for more detailed information) through course work. Note: the "Introductory" authorizations only allow teaching of the given subject on a grade 9 level or below.
