How to Get Started

---------------------------------------------------------------------- The purpose of this page is to help you find the information you will need to gain admission to the Secondary Education Program (SED).

The single subjects credential program at HSU is a one-year program that begins in the fall of each year. It is typically begun after the completion of the bachelors degree. [It is possible for a person who has relatively minor requirements outstanding and can complete the BA during the fall term in addition to completion of a demanding program load to be admitted conditionally.]

Although this is a "fifth-year" or "post-graduate" program, the candidate's status is not "graduate." The term "graduate" applies to a candidate for a masters or other advanced degree. The purpose of the credential program is to prepare students for a successful first year of teaching with the skills to grow and improve over time. The purpose of a masters program, in education for example, would be to extend one's background in the history, theory and research methods of education to enable a higher level of analysis and development than is essential for the beginning teacher and/or to prepare for doctoral work.
The campus extends most of the privileges of graduate status to credential candidates, however.

After you have read the information on this SED net site and the information about admission of prospective students and/or transfer students on the HSU Admissions and Records site and the entrance requirements for admission to the Single Subjects Credential Program, there are several steps to enter the SED Program.
