How to Travel in London:
Aleksandra Mesaros

I had been waiting for my paycheck to arrive for what seemed like an eternity. Normally I’d have no problem budgeting my money, relying diligently on my perfectly balanced checkbook, but this summer was different, I was studying abroad in London.

When my paycheck finally arrived, I went over my finances in my head. I’d have about $3,000 dollars to support myself for the 5 weeks I’d be in London. That seemed like enough until I exchanged 300 US dollars for British Pounds. Stuffing the awkwardly- large, brightly-colored foreign money into my wallet, I realized the bank teller had made a mistake. I had given her 300 dollars and she only gave me 125 pounds. When I brought this to her attention she laughed, saying that the exchange rate was over 2:1. My stomach dropped; would I go broke visiting London?

Amazingly, I returned to the states with only a minor depletion to my savings account, and with a few easy tips, you won’t have to worry about going broke on your next vacation to London either.

Getting There

Get your plane tickets early! I can’t stress this enough. Booking your tickets even a few months in advance can save you hundreds of dollars. There are many wonderful discount airline websites, but in my experience the best is STA travel. If you’re a student, a professor, or just under 25 years old, this site has amazing discounts, including packaged deals like their London/Paris special for just $500 round trip. Be aware that if you’re traveling during the tourist season, generally June through late August, airfare will double in price, so try and schedule vacations during the off season.
