Continuous Forest InventoryThere are 68 permanent plots each 1/10 acre in area. An inventory is taken every few years to measure growth. Among many other factors, the health and age of a forest determine the amount of growth. Data collected in these inventories can be useful for future studies. |
Redwood Range ExtensionPlanted on the Tree Farm are coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens ) trees. The Tree Farm is actually out of the natural range of the coast redwood. Redwoods will grow almost anywhere they are planted as long as they get enough water and light. There are numerous experimental redwood plantations on the Tree Farm. |
Marcella's thesis projectMarcella is testing different acetic acid (vinegar) concentrations on poisonoak plants. Preliminary tests indicate that, in the sun, household vinegar dries the leaves and allows for a less hazardous eradication of the plant. Poisonoak growing in the shade may require a higher concentration of acetic acid. |
Pollen core samplingBrenden is collecting a core sample from the beaver pond to be usedfor pollen grain analysis. By examining at pollens he can determine how the plant life in an area has changed over time. He can go back thousands of years with a single core sample. |
