| There is a new education benefit available to certain reservists who were activated for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001. We call this benefit the “Reserve Educational Assistance Program” (REAP) or Chapter 1607. REAP was established as a part of the Ronald W. Reagan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005. It is a new Department of Defense education benefit program designed to provide educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency (contingency operation) as declared by the President or Congress. Any withdrawal or failure to attend class may result in a status change and possibly create an overpayment. You will be required to pay back the overpayment immediately. | DVA regulations require that all previous education as well as military training and experience be evaluated according to the baccalaureate level recommendation in the Ace Guide and where applicable, be applied to shorten the program of education being pursued. It is the veteran's responsibility to ensure that official documents showing completion of all military education training, education and occupations be submitted to our office no later than the second semester of enrollment. | No payment of educational benefits will be made for courses not counting towards satisfying graduation requirements, auditing courses or a course for which the grade assigned is not used in computing graduation requirements. This includes a status change for courses from which the eligible veteran, dependent or spouse withdraws or receives a final grade of "W","WU" or "NC" unless mitigating circumstances are involved in the withdrawal. You are required to report the last date of attendance for all courses you stop attending. Failure to report this date and/or mitigating circumstances will result in an overpayment beginning the first day of the semester. Humboldt State has agreed to receive and process the paperwork for advance payment of your first two months of Montgomery GI Bill. It is recommended by our office to arrange to have tuition paid by means other than your advanced payment. If you notify the cashiers office at the time your tuition is due that you are a veteran and will receive advance pay, they will defer your tuition due date until the first week of instruction. Advance paychecks are sent directly to Veterans Enrollment & Transition Services for disbursement during the month of August. Please note that all of the following requirements must be met:

| Veterans experiencing difficulties or deficiencies in a specific course may obtain a tutor. Any veteran or eligible person who would like to pursue fee coverage for a tutor through DVA should contact Veterans Enrollment & Transition Services for the appropriate forms and information. The DVA will reimburse the veteran up to a maximum of $100.00 per month for 12 months to a maximum of $1,200.00. To be eligible for tutorial assistance, you must be attending class at least half time and provide a letter from the instructor prior to the 8th week of the semester indicating that there is a deficiency and tutoring is necessary in order to pass the course. Please contact the Humboldt State University Tutorial Center on campus for a list of tutors. | Veterans enrolled under chapters 30, 31, 35,1606, or 1607 and who are enrolled at least 3/4 time are eligible to apply for VA Work-Study. Disabled veterans with a service connected disability will be given preference. A student may work up to 40 hours a week at the hourly minimum wage in effect under the Fair Labor Standards Act. These hours must be worked while your enrolled at an accredited institution. You may begin work 30 days prior to the first day of instruction. This program is an additional benefit and therefore is a tax free income. | Veterans can enroll in Humboldt State University's Summer session or attend summer courses through the Extended Education Program on campus. Payment of 24 units completed towards your program or major of extended education courses is allowed by the DVA as long as the course is in the current catalog. Keep in mind that the DVA will only pay for the time you are actually in the class(es).
