Guidelines for Homework

To receive full credit for your homework assignment please observe all of the following guidelines:

  1. Your name, ‘Math 415’, the homework number, and the assignment including page numbers, must all appear at the top right hand corner of your paper.

  2. Write out the statement of each problem.

  3. In True/False questions, if you say “True”, you must give a (very) brief indication of why.  If you say “False”, you must give a counterexample, that is, an example in which the statement is false.

  4. If something is not completely apparent, you must show some work.  Do not just write a number, etc., as your answer.

  5.  If you use implication signs , or “if and only if” (iff) to indicate implications, use these symbols correctly and carefully.   Do not use these symbols for any other purpose, e.g., when two quantities are equal.  Similarly, use the quantifiers , , etc., correctly and carefully.

  6.  Write some words to indicate your steps in solutions, in particular in proofs.

  7.  Make a real effort on all the assigned problems.

  8.  The problems that are graded must be complete and correct.

  9.  Write on one side of the page only.

  10.  Written work must be neat and legible.  Graphs must be drawn carefully and neatly.

  11.  If you use paper from a ringed binder, trim the left edge of the paper (if it is messy).

  12.  Staple multiple pages together.

  13.  Paper must be unwrinkled, and free of extraneous marks, food stains, etc.  Messy or annoying work will be returned unread.
