Wright Wildlife Refuge

Wildlife student conducting a talk with childrenThe Wright Wildlife Refuge was donated to the Humboldt Area Foundation (HAF) by Ellen Wright in 1989. In

1993, Dr. George initiated a bird banding program that follows the MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) protocol. Since then, Wildlife students have banded over 200 birds at the refuge each year. In the summer of 1995 the refuge teamed up with the HSU Natural History Museum to develop a bird banding education program at the refuge. The goal of the program is to acquaint children with our local songbirds, help them understand conservation issues that birds and other wildlife face, and meet adults who are involved in wildlife conservation and research.
With the help of students from Eureka High School the bird banding facility was completed in the Spring of 1996. The building has educational displays, banding facilities, and even electric lights. Two graduate students Mollie Hurt and Arianna Brand received support from the refuge for their thesis research. Both have completed their MS degrees on the affects of fragmentation on birds of the Redwood Region. Click on the following link to learn more about the facilities.
