About the Ethnic Studies Minor

The minor consists of 15 units of approved courses in Ethnic Studies, including ES 105, "Introduction to U.S. Ethnic Studies." Students may take a range of Ethnic Studies courses or develop a specialization within your Ethnic Studies minor. The ES program director must approve all the courses taken by the student for the ES minor. HSU students minor in ES because they seek to expand their vision of the world with a cross-cultural comparative perspective and to make a difference in the present and future world.

Ethnic Studies Minors want:

to know more about the diverse sociocultural experiences of ethnic/racial minority and majority groups through history, literature, art, culture, and society in the U.S. and global contexts.

to understand the nature of oppression and domination and to find possible solutions for resistance and social justice.

to explore human diversity and commonality in terms of race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, religion, and nationality in various sociocultural contexts.

to study in a student-centered and interactive learning environment.

Career Opportunities

With the changing ethnic composition of society, there is clear and growing demand for individuals in education, government, and the private sector with knowledge and expertise in ethnic/racial/class and cross-cultural relations. An Ethnic Studies minor can prepare students for careers in education, business, law, government service, social work, social welfare, health care, human services, public policy, law enforcement, urban planning, and community development.
