Program Description
The Oaxaca Program is an intense 10-week full immersion summer program offered exclusively by the Department of World Languages and Cultures to Humboldt State University students from all fields of study. Students from other universities and colleges, as well as community members, are also encouraged to apply.

This program follows the Humboldt State University Summer Schedule and generally begins the first week in June and ends the second week in August. Interested students who meet minimum qualifications should apply in the fall semester by completing the on-line application generally not later than the 15th of February.

Location
Oaxaca is a state located in the South-eastern region of Mexico; it borders on the north with Veracruz and Puebla, Chiapas on the East, Guerrero on the West and the Pacific Ocean on the south. [Map] The pleasant sub-tropical climate and the serenity of distant places attract most travelers to the Oaxaca Valley. It has peaks reaching almost 10,000 feet (more than 3,000 meters), caverns among the deepest in the world, virgin beaches, hidden jungles, and luminous valleys that house populations where, as a crucible, cultures of all people who once lived in its midst come together. Zapotecs, Mixtecs, and the fourteen other ethnic groups still present in its culture and customs. Oaxaca is the most diverse state in Mexico. Universidad Autónoma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca
The Language Center of Benito Juarez University of Oaxaca (Centro de Idiomas) was established in 1974 and has served well numerous Mexican and international students. The Centro de Idiomas offers on a regular semester basis courses in English, French, Italian, Japanese, German, Spanish, Zapotec, Mixtec, Russian and Portuguese.

Program Highlights

  • All courses apply to the HSU Spanish major, minor or HSU electives.
  • Some courses apply to the Latin American Studies Concentration in the HSU International Studies Program.
  • Financial Aid may be used to cover all related expenses.

Program cost varies from year to year due to changes in the Mexican economy as well as Humboldt State University tuition changes. Contact the Oaxaca Program Director to obtain current program cost information.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three semesters of college level Spanish or equivalent.
  • HSU or Extended Education student in good standing.
