Bass: As May aproaches, the bass action across the state will be heating up. The spawn is well underway in most lakes and reservoirs and large numbers of bass are being landed by fishermen everywhere. California Delta 5/11/00 There are alot of fish in alot of different areas. I know it souds vauge, but it's true. If you have a good spot in the Delta for bass in the spawn to post-spawn mode, hit it now. I have had the privaledge to catch a few nice ones' this year so far ( go to pics page and see) On the 22nd of April, WON Bass had another Delta region team tournament. There were 60 teams and alot of fish! I had the privalidge to fish in it with my partner Fred Roumbanis. We finished fourth with 19.34 lbs. Enough about that other than to say the WON Bass folks are wonderful and conduct a great tournament. On the 6th there was another 100% Bass Delta Region team event and again I was there. My partner, Fred Roumbanis (Of Anglers Dream Guide service) and I boated a limit of 19.33lbs for the 7-fish limit. We placed 16th. The bite was good but we were plauged with lost fish and breakoffs. That's what light line will do in the Delta. Soft jerkbaits and blades accounted for most of the quality fish. The Report: Many fish are in post spawn locations, away from the shallow spawning areas. Check the main grass lines nearest deeper water around your favorite spots to find these schools of big female fish. They are sluggish during the post spawn period so you will have to slow down to get the bites. One of my favorite post spawn lures is a crankbait. Fish it slowly around and over grass near spawning flats. Another great post spawn bait is the buzzbait. This lure can produce fish all day with a little cloud cover. Areas to check out are Franks track and Big Break. Both of these areas have ample numbers of bass at the moment and also get alot of pressure but with each new tide bring in new recruits, and this means fish to catch! Good luck and be safe. One team in the WON Bass team event had a dangerous turn of events when a fast boat and one of those big delta widwaves met. Both men left the boat, one with a broken arm. Luckily, another team was nearbye and brought them in so be safe as well. Turkey season is now underway. Although most hunters target private land for turkeys, there are some good public hunts. Cache creek is on good bet. Also the public lands bordering Lake Shasta hold alot of toms. |
