English 102 and English 103: Composition and Rhetoric A and B
- Two-semester sequence with the same cohort.
- Moderately paced first-year writing course with more time to complete and more support for assignments.
- Curriculum begins with shorter (3-4 page) pieces and builds to more substantial (5-7 page) argumentative essays that integrate multiple research sources and incorporate various perspectives.
- Intended for students who will benefit from more steps throughout instruction and more time to build academic reading and revising skills.
- 21 students per class.
- Successful completion of English 102-103 plus a passing Assessment Portfolio earns six credits and satisfies the GE Area A Written Communication requirement.
English 104: Accelerated Composition and Rhetoric
- One-semester cohort.
- Aggressively paced first-year writing course.
- Curriculum throughout semester focuses on rhetorical analysis and more substantial (5-7 page) argumentative essays that integrate multiple sources and incorporate various perspectives.
- Intended for self-motivated students who are confident with the rigors and expectations of college-level reading and writing.
- 25 students per class.
- Successful completion of English 104 plus a passing Assessment Portfolio earns three credits and satisfies the GE Area A Written Communication requirement.
English 215: Information Literacy and Writing Seminar
- One-semester cross-disciplinary writing and research course.
- Two units of elective credit. Meets one day a week in computer lab.
- Student-driven curriculum and pacing.
- Curriculum includes instruction in and support for research methods and digital literacies; practice using online writing resources; time to research individually; and skills for locating, using, and evaluating all types of resources.
- Intended to provide support for the reading, writing, and research efforts for students in any HSU course.
- 18 students per class.
