Software :: Update Services for Windows

Description

To ensure timely software updates to HSU-owned Windows computer, the University has deployed Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM). SCCM enables users to install updates at a time that's convenient for them, as well as to install new applications available in the campus applications catalog. The system sends a pop-up message to users when updates to standard campus applications are available, along with a deadline by which those updates need to be installed; updates not installed by the deadline will be installed by SCCM automatically.

The required SCCM client software has already been installed on all HSU-owned and centrally managed Windows PCs.


Additional Information

Many of the updates pushed out by SCCM are related to system security, so users are requested to install scheduled updates as soon as possible after the notification is sent. See the Windows update schedule for more information. 

To install approved applications using SCCM, go to http://myApps.humboldt.edu, select the application you want, and then click the Install button. You'll be notified as to whether you need to reboot your computer after installation.


Accessing This Service

The SCCM controls are accessed by clicking on the notification when it pops up. We recommend saving and closing active tasks before beginning the update process, as a system reboot is frequently required to complete the update installation.


Using This Service

After saving and closing active tasks, click on the pop-up and select View Required Option. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the updates right away or schedule them for a more convenient time. Step-by-step instructions are posted on the ITS website.

Note that the updates must be installed by the deadline shown alongside the required updates. The update process will be completed automatically by the system if you do not complete it yourself before the deadline. You need to be aware of this, as most updates require that your system be restarted for the updates to take effect.


Location

SCCM is installed on the HSU network, and the necessary client software is installed on all centrally managed HSU-owned Windows PCs.
