2011 was a year of surprises in the earthquake world.  A magnitude 6.1 aftershock in New Zealand caused more damage than the magnitude 7 main shock five months previously, and Japan experienced a much larger earthquake (and ensuing tsunami) than planners and most scientists believed possible.

Student Panel on the study of Arab Middle East and Islamic Cultural Regions, Nelson Hall East 102 (Goodwin Forum)

A panel of three students who have made special efforts in study abroad, language study, or other in-depth work in aspects of Arabic and Islamic culture.  Students will discuss their travel, the results of their study, and strategies for success, so as to help other students who might like to pursue international study.

This illustrated talk enters the very different classroom and field environments of the Arabian Peninsula and Northern Andes, where higher education is thriving thanks to oil-age revenue.

Marbaila Tariq, "Cultural Diversity of Pakistan," Nelson Hall East 102 (Goodwin Forum)

This talk describes Pakistan, its history, features, religious and national celebrations, festivals, and daily life.  I will discuss why Pakistan is important for world and some about present conditions in Pakistan.  Videos will be provided to show more descriptive pictures of Pakistan.

Swami Ishwanrandanda, "Gita View of Life," Nelson Hall East 102 (Goodwin Forum)

Life is continuous flow of experiences," said Swami Chinmayananda.  Bhagavad-Gita teaches us to live a conscious and productive life, expressing inner divinty and outer dynamism in every endeavor we undertake. Swami Ishwarananda will touch upon various teachings from Bhagavad-Gita to highlight this Hindu scripture as "guide book for excellence in Living."

Though there are around 6500 languages in the world today, many die at an alarming rate. This documentary examines endangered languages in Bolivia, Siberia, India.  Discussion follows with HSU linguists and anthropologists.
