How did you start your business?
After retiring from 40+ in education, I began writing a series of field guides for children and families. These are unique books that teach children, as well as adults, about many of the mammals, birds, and marine invertebrates we find here in Alaska. I was encouraged by other local writers to self-publish the series, and so began OceanOtter Publishing. At this time, there are six books in this series, with many more to come.

This was very serendipitous. I started off as an intern under the former owner of the Pilates studio called, Arcata Core Pilates. She hired me on as the studio manager while I received my Pilates teacher training. After managing the business for about 2 years she asked me if I wanted to buy the business! LACO Associates, a prominent firm with offices in Northern California, was founded by Ilmars Lagzdins in 1954, with an aspiration to serve the extensive Northern California region.
