Job description: Teach undergraduate and graduate courses with an emphasis in soil science, integrating classroom, laboratory, and field-based learning. Develop and maintain a research program focused on environmental soil chemistry and its applications to rangeland and natural resource systems. Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research, academic, and professional development.

Why did you choose this program?
I chose the ESM major because it provided a well-rounded understanding of landscapes and the many factors that influence how we manage them. The program taught me to consider everything from soils and plants to environmental policy and grant writing. This broad, interdisciplinary approach created a strong foundation in natural systems and their management and prepared me to approach environmental challenges from multiple perspectives.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
The major prepared me for my career by teaching me to think critically and interdisciplinarily. I learned to consider the connections among different ecosystem components, as well as the perspectives and needs of diverse stakeholders. This holistic approach has helped me evaluate complex environmental challenges through multiple lenses and develop thoughtful, science-based solutions.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
I enjoyed the program because almost every lab took us outside into the beautiful natural classroom of Humboldt County. I also appreciated the flexibility to choose courses that aligned with my interests and curiosity. This gave me opportunities to explore questions I had about the natural world while gaining hands-on experience with a wide variety of field methods and ecological surveys.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
Do it--you won't regret it! The ESM program gives you the flexibility to explore your interests while building a strong foundation in science and natural resource management. I would also encourage you to check out Rangeland Resource Science, too!!
The professors in ESM are incredible, and you'll have so much fun learning with them, both in the classroom and out in the field!
