Exchange Student Post-Admit Steps

Post-Admit Steps For Inbound Exchange Students (CSU IP/Bilateral Partner)

Congratulations on your admission to Cal Poly Humboldt for exchange. Please complete the following post-admission steps, by the published deadlines to secure your acceptance and prepare for your successful transition to study at Cal Poly Humboldt.

  1. Humboldt Account Activation. Activate your Humboldt account.  You will need to do this to complete many of the required post-admit steps below.  You can find instructions online HERE.
  2. Complete your Immigration Checklist (Deadline:  Fall - May 15; Spring - October 15).  You must submit all required supporting immigration documents (Certificate of Finance Form, Evidence of Funding, and Passport Copy) no later than the deadline listed so that we can prepare your immigration form DS2019 in time for you to apply for your visa.  Failure to meet the deadline may result in the inability to secure a visa appointment in time to attend by the start of school.
  3. Accept Your Admission/Confirm Enrollment (Deadline: Fall - June 1; Spring - November 15). To finalize your admission and to help staff and departments prepare for your arrival, please accept your offer by emailing confirmation that you intend to participate in your exchange.  Please email confirmation to international@humboldt.edu.
  4. Complete the Pre-Arrival International Online Orientation Course (Deadline: Fall - June 1; Spring - November 15). You must complete the International Online Orientation Course, IHOOP, before you will be allowed to register for classes. This program will help you prepare by addressing important topics like culture, immigration, international health insurance and the class selection/registration process.  Access the course HERE.
  5. Apply for J1 Student Visa. Once you obtain your DS2019 you will need to apply for your J1 visa to enter the U.S. for study. The immigration form DS2019 will be emailed to you once you have completed the immigration checklist (Certification of Finance Form, Evidence of Funding, Copy of Passport Photo Page) by the deadline.  Once you have your DS2019 in hand, you can begin the visa application process. Detailed information on the process will be included in your email containing the DS2019.      For detailed information on how to apply for your visa, please visit our website HERE.
  6. Apply for Housing. Information about on-campus housing may be found on the Housing & Residence Life website. We encourage exchange students to live on-campus during their temporary stay with us.
  7. Class Registration (April-Fall/November-Spring)  You will be sent an email with important class registration instructions along with a registration appointment date a few months before your semester start.      We encourage you to register for classes as soon as possible once your date is reached.  Class spaces can fill up quickly.
  8. Plan to Participate in On-Campus Orientation. Our on-campus orientation is a fun way to learn about campus resources, meet new students and get acquainted with your new campus community. You will be emailed information about the on-campus orientation program a few months before your semester start.
  9. Send a copy of your issued J1 visa to international@humboldt.edu

In addition to the steps above, please continue to monitor your email for important updates and information from Cal Poly Humboldt.
