Gain the communication, design, and digital skills needed for careers as an interpretive park ranger, environmental educator, naturalist, zoo/museum/aquarium/botanical garden educator, visitor services specialist, nature/science center program coordinator, social media manager, or interpretive exhibit designer.  This certificate program can be completed in one academic year.

What you’ll learn

Learn the basics, including theories, processes, goals of environmental education and interpretation, evolution of disciplines, and curriculum design. As you advance through the program, you’ll gain hands-on experience delivering interpretive programs, developing environmental education curriculum, facilitating educational events, building digital media products, designing interpretive materials, and producing real-world products for outside agencies.

Environmental & Natural Resources Planning Certificate

Society is facing complex environmental and development challenges such as climate change, hazards/disasters such as floods, drought and wildfires, housing shortages, pollution, and loss of species and habitats. There is a need for planners who can weigh environmental, social, economic, and political considerations and work with communities to envision just and sustainable futures. The Environmental & Natural Resources Planning certificate provides an overview of planning processes and techniques through multiple disciplines. 

What you’ll learn

Environmental and natural resources planning requires an interdisciplinary approach and students gain experience in a variety of fields. They learn about laws and political processes that inform planning at local, state, federal, and even international scales. Students develop an in-depth understanding of planning methods and approaches with specific coursework related to environmental conservation and land use planning on public and private lands, in rural communities, and in coastal and marine environments. They develop environmental and natural science field research and geospatial data analysis skills. Students learn about economic principles and how they apply to environmental concerns. They also gain skills related to conflict resolution and community engagement.

Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Social Work

The PPSC-SSW online certificate program builds upon the Master of Social Work curriculum by providing specialized instruction to develop the knowledge, skills, and values required to effectively provide social work services within public school systems. Social workers who successfully complete the program will be eligible to apply to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) for the Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Social Work.

What you’ll learn

Explore challenges faced by public schools from a systems perspective. This includes influences of federal statutory and regulatory requirements, state and local policies, community demands, and the interface with other child-serving systems including Tribal governments, child welfare, probation, and mental health. 

Also explore the day-to- day aspects of school social work, such as issues involving confidentiality; social workers as mandated reporters; collaborating with students, school staff, caregivers, and families; attendance and behavior management systems; crisis intervention and more.
 

Program highlights

The PPSC-SSW provides the authorization to assess home, school, personal, and community factors that may affect a student’s learning; identify and provide intervention strategies for children and their families; consult with teachers, administrators, and other school staff regarding the social and emotional needs of students; and coordinate family, school, and community resources on behalf of students.

Climate Justice & Resilience Leadership Certificate

The Climate Justice & Resilience Leadership Certificate program provides a holistic perspective of the effects of, and those affected by,  climate change. In it, you will hone socio-political, economic, aesthetic, decolonial, anti-racist, and psychological analyses to develop climate solutions in community. The program is geared toward students who want to demonstrate climate justice acumen in any sector or career path.

What you’ll learn

Understand how sustainability and the climate crisis are connected to racism, colonialism, and structural injustice, and gain the skills needed to participate as a sensitive actor in building the justice movement, for personal resilience, and to sustain collective capacity-building efforts.
