About Charley

Why did you choose this program?

I chose this program because I wanted to extend my education and learn more about the local, Native history. My reasoning is to learn the problems that Indigenous people face to better identify long-term solutions.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

Native American Studies prepared me for my job by providing me insight into what families and communities are exposed to such as poverty, grief, and disparities, etc. In addition, this program provided knowledge and experience that can help families reconnect to land management practices, food sovereignty, and cultural practices. Tools and wisdom that I use every day in and out of the workforce.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

I enjoyed the connection to my professors and colleagues in the classroom the most. I met some of the kindest and empowering people in the Native American Studies Department!

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

I would say to be prepared to learn some heavy topics but also be prepared to share the wisdom that comes from those topics. I would also encourage people to speak up in classroom settings, meet with professors and classmates to ensure you are getting the best out of everyone, including yourself.
