About Us

Cartography at Cal Poly Humboldt, housed in the Geography Department, is part of the larger interdisplinary Geospatial Program. We offer three cartography classes at Humboldt, all located in the KOSMOS lab in Founders Hall. The KOSMOS lab, named after the works of Alexander von Humboldt, was designed to support geography students and provide space to integrate mapping and geospatial applications throughout the geography cirriuculum.

GSP 316: Cartography (4) - This is our introductory cartography course which focuses both on the techniques to create maps within GIS software and the larger role of maps and mapmaking in political systems and socialcultural organizations. GSP 316 is coffered every semester. See GSP 316 final projects hanging in the north wing on the first floor of Founders Hall. See GSP 316 Student Projects Here.

GSP 416: Advanced Cartography (4) - Our advanced cartography course transitions from GIS to design software, placing a heavy emphasis on creativity, expression, and building a personal cartographic style. GSP 416 is offered every spring semester. See GSP 416 student portfolios hanging on the first floor of Founders Hall between the KOSMOS lab and the Geography Office. See GSP 416 Student Projects Here.
