Anna Neely

R&D Analyst

Employer: TigerRisk Partners LLC

Job description: Managing property insurance risk involves a deep level of understanding of the hazards that can affect a property. I help clients to understand the risks to events which might have happened before, but which they still need to be prepared for. For example, how can we quantify the potential cost to homeowners and insurers when California experiences its next big earthquake? Simulation models help us to understand the likelihood and the financial implications of this kind of event. With only a few models available to our clients to understand major and costly natural catastrophes, understanding the risk and any potential blind spots is critical. In my role, I assess these models and help our clients use them in the most informed way.

About Anna

Why did you choose this program?

I chose to study math modeling because I liked the idea of applying it to environmental systems. I find it motivating to model systems you can observe.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

In my thesis work, I developed and tested a simplified wildfire spread model. I was exposed to programming and literature research. Both of these skills came in handy when I began modeling wildfire spread in my first job out of graduate school.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

I enjoyed the investment from the faculty in my interests and success. The course content was also grounded in real-world applications, making it relevant for work after graduation.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

A masters in math modeling will set you apart and provide you with unique opportunities.
