Suzanne Gainey

Professional Musician & Music Educator

Employer: Self

Job description: I have a thriving private music studio in Bend, Oregon, where I teach piano and cello. I currently play and perform in the Cello section with the Central Oregon Symphony. Singing is another passion and I am currently singing and performing as a guest artist with the Master Singers of Central Oregon. I have also previously worked for several church congregations as a worship musician and liturgy director of music over the years.

I was recently selected to be a Tholen Fellow in the 2021-2022 Portland Piano International fellowship and will be studying with Master Pianist and Teacher Tatiana Ioudenitch for two years to take my artistry and teaching to the next level. This prestigious fellowship is awarded to professional pianists & educators throughout the state of Oregon every two years.

I also serve as a board member for the local Youth Orchestra in Central Oregon and have performed as a guest artist on piano and cello for various local groups and performers over the years.

About Suzanne

Why did you choose this program?

I always knew I wanted to be a music teacher from a young age and Humboldt had a wonderful teaching certificate program as well as dynamic faculty from all over the nation and world. The smaller environment was ideal, as I was able to interact with professors on a regular basis one-on-one, rather than a teacher's assistant, like many large universities operate in California. The personal touch and the beautiful setting in the Redwoods were a big draw for me as a young student embarking on my first experience away from home.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

I was very prepared for my job. I was able to work at the Children's Music Academy to hone my teaching skills, I played for many vocalists and other performers and gained valuable accompanying experience, and I was also able to work at several churches in the community and learned how to direct liturgy and worship.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

Teacher accessibility, they really cared about my success as a student and went the extra mile to support me.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

Go for it! You will not regret furthering your education and experiences.
