Environmental Science & Management, B.S. | Class of
Sydney Mathis
Founding Director
Employer: EGE Foundation (Eternal Generations Emerging)
Job description: I am the Founding Director of the EGE Foundation, where I lead the vision, strategy, and growth of an organization dedicated to expanding access to environmental education, workforce development, and global learning opportunities for youth and communities.
In this role, I oversee the development and implementation of programs that serve 200–300 youth annually, including after-school learning, outdoor field experiences, community workshops, and leadership pathways such as internships and fellowships. I have led the creation of culturally responsive curriculum designed for schools, community-based organizations, and future facilitator certification.
My work centers on building a full pipeline of opportunity—from early exposure and education to leadership development and international exchange. Through partnerships across the U.S. and in countries such as Uganda, I help design and implement initiatives that connect local impact to a broader global vision of sustainability and community empowerment.
As the founding leader, I have built and managed all core aspects of the organization, including program design, strategic partnerships, fundraising, grant management, operations, and community engagement. I work closely with public agencies, school districts, nonprofits, and private partners to secure resources, expand programming, and increase access for historically underserved communities.
Currently, I am focused on scaling the organization’s impact by strengthening systems, expanding partnerships, and transitioning into a more strategic leadership role that supports long-term sustainability and growth.
About Sydney
Why did you choose this program?
I was a transfer from Oregon State's Forestry program and knew that "HSU" was the top forestry program in CA. I became an EMP Rec major with the support of Susan Marshall and Steve Martin, when I realized forestry wasn't my path. I wanted to learn and teach about the environment as a whole and connect more people of color to it.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
In many ways, I gained exposure and understanding to help elevate my career. After graduating from HSU, I went on to complete my masters in Park & Resource Management at Slippery Rock University, a program that I got connected with through Steve Martin's recommendation to intern in Pennsylvania with the National Park Service. In my professional career, I've explored fields such as recreation, field research and conservation, environmental compliance, construction, policy and public administration throughout my career journey.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
I had the most amazing counselor - Steve! He guided me along the way and really invested time to ensure I was not only on the right track, but on a track that was in alignment for my personal goals.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
Be open...college is really about learning who you are and what you want to bring to this world. Don't limit the possibilities of your potential based on a achieving a job title or simply having a degree. Find your passion and turn it into your purpose!
I am grateful for HSU...my vision came to life in this place and it still holds the deepest part of my heart! I usually visit at least once a year, just to stay connected for the source and reason behind my vision.
