Why did you choose this program?

Growing up in foster care, I didn't always have the opportunity to make choices about many parts of my life. But one thing I did know was that I loved technology. Computers became a place where I could explore, create, and solve problems in ways that weren't limited by my circumstances.

Choosing Computer Science was one of the first major decisions that truly felt like my own. It gave me a sense of purpose, independence, and hope for the future. Every line of code I wrote reminded me that I had the ability to build something meaningful and create opportunities for myself.

Today, that passion has grown beyond just learning technology. My goal is to help others—especially those who may feel overlooked or unsure of where they belong—discover that they, too, have a place in tech. Through education, mentorship, and community, I hope to show that your past does not define your future.

Computer Science didn't just become my career—it became a way for me to create choices, inspire others, and build the future I once only imagined.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

Cal Poly Humboldt prepared me for my career by providing a strong foundation in computer science while emphasizing hands-on learning, collaboration, and real-world problem solving. Through coursework, programming projects, and team-based assignments, I developed technical skills in software development, algorithms, data structures, databases, web development, and systems design that I now use in my role as a Junior Web Developer.

Beyond technical knowledge, the program strengthened my ability to think critically, troubleshoot complex problems, and communicate technical concepts effectively. Working on projects with classmates taught me how to collaborate in team environments, use version control, manage project timelines, and adapt to new technologies.
Most importantly, Cal Poly Humboldt taught me how to be a lifelong learner.

Technology is constantly evolving, and the program prepared me to continue learning, embrace new challenges, and apply my knowledge in meaningful ways. Today, I use those skills not only to build software but also to empower others by making computer science more accessible, inclusive, and engaging.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

The part I enjoyed most about the Computer Science program at Cal Poly Humboldt was the professors. Computer Science is a challenging field, and there were many times when I struggled with difficult concepts and questioned whether I was capable of succeeding. What made the biggest difference was having professors who believed in me, encouraged me, and never gave up on me—even when I felt like giving up on myself.

Their patience, guidance, and willingness to answer questions created an environment where I felt supported and motivated to keep learning. They challenged me to think critically, solve problems, and become a better programmer while reminding me that growth comes through perseverance.

Their investment in my success inspired me to become an educator myself. Today, I strive to teach with the same patience and encouragement they showed me, creating a learning environment where others feel supported, valued, and confident that they can succeed in technology.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

If you're thinking about applying to the Computer Science program at Cal Poly Humboldt, my biggest piece of advice is: don't be afraid to try.

Computer Science isn't easy, and there will be moments when you feel challenged or even doubt yourself. I know because I experienced those moments too. But struggling doesn't mean you don't belong—it means you're learning.

Take advantage of your professors, classmates, tutoring, and campus resources. Ask questions, stay curious, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Some of the greatest lessons come from working through problems that don't have an immediate solution.

The professors genuinely care about your success and want to see you grow. If you're willing to put in the effort and keep showing up, you'll be surprised by how much you can accomplish.

Most importantly, remember that everyone starts somewhere. You don't have to know everything before you begin. You just have to be willing to learn, stay persistent, and believe in your ability to grow. The journey may be challenging, but the skills, confidence, and opportunities you'll gain are well worth it.
