Environmental Studies, B.A. | Class of

Jack Davis

Educator

Job description: I use the title educator because I have had a number of education roles since I graduated from HSU. I taught environmental education through the San Diego Parks and Recreation Department. At Lost Coast Camp I was a camp counselor and backpacking guide for multiple seasons in Petrolia, CA. I was also an educator through Trackers, a forest school in Portland Oregon. Currently I have returned to higher education and I'm attending Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo to obtain a teaching credential to teach elementary school. I am student teaching in a kindergarten classroom. I love working with kids and my intention is to be a positive male role model and promote social justice and curiosity and love for the natural world.

About Jack

Why did you choose this program?

I chose this program because I felt that it would help me refine the way I look at social and environmental problems locally and globally. Before declaring ENST, I was interested in interdisciplinary studies and international studies. As much as I value learning about the international community I needed to step into a localized understanding and was guided to environmental studies. ENST provided classes and resources to build my awareness of the world and how I can fit into it.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

This job has helped me in every job I have. ENST can be applied to just about anything. ENST helped me to build a critical lens but also to not fall into the traps of idealism. I have solved problems and provided data and information in different jobs to build more just and equitable spaces. This program also helped me to acknowledge that time and dedication is the name of the game. Patience is key and committing to an organization, community, or company is crucial to make the changes one wishes to make.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

I enjoyed the community that developed during my time in the program. I felt motivated and encouraged by the faculty and my peers. It was a family that I needed during my time at HSU. I enjoyed the encouragement to lead workshops, participate in social change and in the community.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

I would say ENST is hard work emotionally. There is so much growth that can take place during ENST that I think is necessary for everyone. I think that college is a time for personal growth and development, however one must be as present as possible in ENST to come out of the program with agency. I also think that it is important to get involved in the community or learn skills to complement the ones gained in the program.

I applaud you for considering the environmental studies program at Humboldt State University. Take the time to consider what you care about, how you envision making a difference, and breathe in the fact that change takes a deep commitment. Your life can take so many paths after the ENST program.

The friends that I made during the program are all doing amazing things to make a difference. That difference takes place anywhere from working with kids, going back home to their community to eliminate inequality, working for nonprofits, building sustainable housing, and tending to the natural world. May your heart and mind lead you towards the future you wish to live in.
