About Gabby
Why did you choose this program?
One of the nice things about being in a smaller program is getting to know your professors on a more personal level. You get more individual attention and feedback in a small department. There are also a good number of performance opportunities that anyone has a chance to participate in.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
I had the opportunity to take a few classes focused on teaching methods for dance in public schools. The basic skills I learned in these courses have been helpful with formulating lesson plans and setting student benchmarks now that I teach at a dance studio. I also got arts administration experience that helped me land an internship with the Seattle International Dance Festival after I graduated.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
I enjoyed delving into new styles of dance that I had not previously had access to! I took the swing class during my first semester at HSU and loved it so much that I retook the class during my final semester. I also had the opportunity to take a semester of African dance and Middle Eastern dance.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
If you are looking for a non-competitive program that provides opportunities to explore multiple styles of dance, then HSU might be a good fit for you!
