About José

Why did you choose this program?

I chose the ENST program at HSU because it combined my passions for environmentalism and social justice. Themes and topics that we would cover in class included: social justice, environmental justice, racism, classism, hope, futurism, art, and many more. Through this major I did not feel limited, we covered so many different things that I felt passionate about and empowered to make a change.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

This program prepared me for my job in that we had various projects that required us to submit applications to potential employers in the environmental field. We practiced public speaking through presentations, class discussions, and group projects. During our senior capstone we had to build our resume, cover letter, and our CV so that we could begin the process of applying to jobs we were interested in pursuing after graduation.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

I really enjoyed spending time with my cohort. We spent our undergrad years together building skills, learning together, working together, and hanging out outside of the classroom. ENST felt like a family because we were such a support system to each other. I could always rely on my peers for help and although we were working towards our own individual goals we helped each other along the way. I could not say the same for my previous majors. I felt lucky to have joined the ENST program, it proved to be a really transformative experience for me.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

If you have a love for the outdoors, are passionate about social/racial/environmental justice, and want to feel like you are a part of a community you should definitely choose ENST. I think it is such a versatile major, no matter what you are passionate about, there is a place for you within this major.

I owe a lot to Sarah J. Ray. My journey within academia has not been easy and she truly is an incredible educator. I don't think I could've graduated without her support.
