Theater of War Banner, the production of Hector, Andromache, and the Death of Astyan

Theater of War Productions Coming to Cal Poly Humboldt

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is working with students, faculty, staff and the administration to bring Theater of War to our campus on October 24th. Theater of War Productions is a New York City Based organization that works with leading film, theater, and television actors to present dramatic readings of seminal plays—from classical Greek tragedies to modern and contemporary works—followed by town hall-style discussions designed to confront social issues by drawing out raw and personal reactions to themes highlighted in the plays. The guided discussions underscore how the plays resonate with contemporary audiences and invites audience members to share their perspectives and experiences, and helps to break down stigmas, foster empathy, compassion, and a deeper understanding of complex issues.

The production, Hector, Andromache, and the Death of Astyanax includes scenes from The Iliad and The Trojan Women to help frame dialogue about the human cost of war, centered on the suffering of children and civilians.  Featuring performances by David Denman (The Office, Mare of Easttown), Nyasha Hatendi (Alex Rider, Casual), Marjolaine Goldsmith (Company Manager, Theater of War Productions), and a chorus of students, faculty, and staff members.

The College is hosting this event to foster dialogue about trauma and conflict, how we manage and respond to them and to help our community grow in its understanding of different perspectives in relation to the crisis on campus in late spring semester 2024, the ongoing conflict in Gaza, and the impacts of war globally. While it will be uncomfortable, the Theater of War experience has the potential to strengthen our relationships, broaden our empathy, and make us more resilient as a community.

Thursday, October 24 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Van Duzer Theatre

This event is free and open to the Cal Poly Humboldt community.

Theater of War at Cal Poly Humboldt is co-sponsored by President Michael Spagna, the Office of Academic Affairs, and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

Double Vision

Artwork by Millian Giang Pham
September 19th - October 19th, 2024 - Reese Bullen Gallery

Featuring works on fabric, Millian Giang Pham’s body of work Double Vision focuses on Viet imagery and materiality, the artist states “My art making is code switching. Each work experiments with the aesthetic codes and conceptual framework of multiple cultures, art mediums, and languages. Larger compositions switch embroidered text with painted imagery to reevaluate the framework of fine art and seemingly lowbrow craft. I use images such as durian, dragon fruit, cashew, and other exotic fruits to allude to class warfare and Otherness—issues that affected my ability to communicate with my parents and many people around me.

Opening Reception + Artist Talk:
Thurs Sept 26th, 4:30pm-6pm, talk at 5pm, ArtB 102

Arts in Health and Narrative Medicine - New Minor

Written by: Alina Ferguson, Anthropolgy and Journalism student

Cal Poly Humboldt’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences has a new interdisciplinary minor: Arts in Health & Narrative Medicine. The minor is a cross-disciplinary collaboration between CRGS, Native American Studies, Environmental Science, English, Music, Theater, Dance, and Art + Film.

“The new minor integrates the excellent curricular offerings our campus has in music, film, theater, dance, visual arts, and creative writing with the coursework available in health.” says Janelle Adsit, Associate Professor and Minor Advisor.

According to the California Creative Workforce Act of 2021, implementing and integrating artists and creative workers into recovery promotes better outcomes related to critical concerns.

This interdisciplinary minor requires students to take 17-18 units of coursework, with an optional community-based learning opportunity. The minor aligns with multiple career pathways: Creative Arts Therapies, Medical Professional Trainer, Arts Administration, Artist-in-Residence/Arts in Healthcare Program Coordination, and Health Educator/Advocate.

Advocate and advisor to the minor, Adsit said she loves this field of study because “There are many experiences and emotions that may be difficult to talk about, but we can express our lives through the arts. In the act of expression, we find connection and a sense of community. The arts allow us to reflect on our complex and irreducible experiences, and invite others to witness who we are with authenticity.”

This minor will help students translate their artistic practices in ways that will benefit not only individuals, but also their communities.

One of the minor's core courses, the ENGL309W Narrative Medicine course, is tailored for pre-med and other pre-health pathways, and it utilizes literary texts to teach key communicative practices that are directly relevant to the clinical setting and to public health. This course also introduces what it means to offer culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS) as health practitioners.

Students of this minor produce artwork, including leading workshops and planning art-based events for the community. Some of their works can be seen on display in the display box in the CAHSS office. Students take at least 8 units in a particular art discipline; they then translate their craft to other contexts, with opportunities to host and facilitate community events, workshops, or projects. Students may choose to take a full course sequence (ART497 & 498) that focuses on community-based learning opportunities in arts, including mural-making or other collaborative design and arts education projects. Students in ENGL307 and ENGL309W also have the option to participate in community-based arts and health opportunities or collaborate with students in other programs.

Students gain an understanding of how the arts meet the sciences with the specific intention of fostering human thriving.
