Collections Management

The CRF offers collections management services to assist our clients with all lab-related needs. Our staff have experience assisting agencies, ranging from localities to branches of the federal government, processing and preparing collections for final curation.

Our knowledge of the collections management field, as well as strong and long-standing relationships with State Historic Preservation Offices in many areas, ensures that our lab-based projects are consistently completed on time, on or under budget, and assures the acceptance of collections by state facilities upon initial submittal.

From Excavation to Curation

One of CRF’s specialties is acquiring large collections from excavations conducted by other firms. We administer the transfer of the materials from various repositories to our laboratory and fully process the assemblage to meet all required curation goals. This includes washing, cataloging, detailed analysis, photographic documentation of artifacts, direct labeling, finalizing all associated documents, and coordination with the chief curator and their staff.

Costco Bottle Collection

This collection of artifacts from the late 18th and early 19th century was excavated from the site of present-day Costco in Eureka, California.

Informally named for its present-day location, the collection originated from a historic dump that was used by local residents and businesses, and served as one of the first formal waste management facilities in the region. The collection contains over 400 artifacts, which students assisted in researching and organizing.
