Music, B.A. | Class of
Bobby Amirkhanian
Music Manager
Employer: Carnival Cruise Line
Job description: I worked as a bandleader on cruise ships for the four years prior to COVID-19; it was a lovely time getting used to traveling around the Caribbean, the eastern coast of Mexico, and the northern coastline of South America. I was able to utilize the skills I acquired while studying at HSU and added a great deal of music to my repertoire while making friends from all over the world.
I'm currently in talks about setting up a remote Casting Agent position with the same company so I can stay in Humboldt while working for a company that has put so much faith in me.
About Bobby
Why did you choose this program?
I began playing music at the age of 17 when I was no longer able to play baseball due to a shoulder injury. I originally went to HSU for Zoology but soon felt the desire to learn more about music and follow that path; I switched after my third semester and continued on to graduate with my BA in Music.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
As a band member I was able to learn repertoire quickly and communicate with my bandmates (even if English was rough at times for those who spoke English as a second language) efficiently and effectively. Once I was promoted to band leader halfway through my second contract, it allowed me to effectively demonstrate what I wanted to happen in an arrangement without worry.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
I still keep in touch with a lot of the professors/staff and a LOT of my old classmates from the Music Department. It felt like a family, and still does at times.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
Music can be a wonderful tool to improve quality of life; HSU is a lovely place to learn the vernacular to do so.
