About Marisa

Why did you choose this program?

I was looking for a school that gave me the freedom and flexibility to explore all of my interests (music and science). The school's location and small classroom sizes also made my decision easy.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

I was able to explore all of my interests while attending the HSU Music program. Each and every single individual within the department went out of their way to ensure I had the ability to explore all of my interests. I was able to take all courses inside and outside of the department of my choosing as well as gain experiences in teaching and conducting that I wouldn't have had at any other site. Leaving HSU, I felt I had the confidence and experience needed to jump into my master's program and ultimately my current teaching position.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

I enjoyed the personability and community built between the faculty/staff and students within the department. Whether it was sitting in the lobby, walking into the staffs' offices to chat, or ensemble playing.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

HSU's Music department is filled with highly qualified staff that will always allot time for you as they desire to see their students succeed. The class sizes allow for a more personable teaching style that ensures you are noticed and heard. There is freedom and flexibility that allows you to explore and learn from others both inside and outside of the department.
