Environmental Science & Management, B.S. | Class of
Sarah McCann
Conservation and Forestry Project Coordinator
Employer: Agland Engineering, Inc.
Job description: I work for Agland Engineering, Inc., a small land management consulting company in Ferndale that focuses primarily on conservation easements, working lands, and natural resource management. Like many people working for a small company, I wear a lot of hats. My work includes coordinating with clients and agencies, supporting conservation easement projects, writing grant proposals, managing outreach, tracking regulatory compliance for forestry and logging operations, handling company billing, and helping keep projects organized from both the office and the field.
One of the things I enjoy about my role is that it gives me a broad view of land management in practice. I get to work at the intersection of conservation, forestry, regulatory compliance, business operations, and community partnerships, while also occasionally getting out in the field for tree monitoring and project support.
About Sarah
Why did you choose this program?
I went into college undeclared because I didn't want to decide my future without knowing what my passion was yet. Through elective courses and a growing care for the environment, I decided ESM Planning & Policy was perfect for me because it was an ideal blend of natural resource science and community engagement.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
I had an existing idea and training in grant writing, GIS, and conservation easements so I was able to understand the world I was getting into.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
It was hands-on and interactive. I had a professor tell me she thought I'd be great at bringing both sides of the table together and that's something I've never forgotten.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
I would say to put in the work and build relationships with the professors. I've been out of school for almost eight years and I still miss it.
Thank you Jeff Dunk, Yvonne Everett, and Judith Mayer for leaving a permanent impact on my life.
