CalFresh, known federally as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), provides monthly food benefits to individuals and families with qualifying income. CalFresh is the largest food program in California and provides an essential hunger safety net. CalFresh is federally mandated and in California, is state-supervised and county-operated.
Monthly CalFresh benefits can help individuals buy nutritious foods. CalFresh benefits stretch food budgets, increasing individuals' and families' ability to afford more fruit, vegetables, grains, and other healthy foods. The amount of benefits a household receives is dependent on household size, countable income, and monthly expenses, such as housing and utilities. The program issues monthly benefits on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card. Food may be purchased at any grocery store or farmers' market that accepts EBT cards. You can also use your benefits to purchase plants to grow your own food and some gardening supplies. How cool is that!
With recent changes to CalFresh’s LPIE list, all students enrolled in a public institution working toward an undergraduate degree at half-time status (6 or more units) are eligible for CalFresh, given they meet income eligibility requirements.
It takes an average of 30 minutes to complete an application for CalFresh. You are able to start and save an application if you need more time.
