Get Involved

Social work students are making a meaningful impact both on campus and beyond. Through hands-on experiences, service-learning opportunities, and active participation in student-led initiatives, our students are deeply engaged in addressing real-world issues and supporting diverse communities.

With a strong focus on working alongside Indigenous and rural communities, our programs are rooted in decolonizing social work practice and building reciprocal, community-centered relationships. Whether it’s through advocacy, volunteering, internships, or leadership roles, our students bring their passion for social justice and community building into every space they enter. Explore how you can get involved—advance your goals, amplify your voice, and make a difference where it matters most.

On Campus

Phi Alpha is the only social work honor society where students can graduate with "social work honors." In our university students at the MSW level must have a 4.0 GPA and at the BASW level must have a 3.64 GPA; both GPA's represent the top 35% of their class.

Social work students have a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience and contribute to their department by becoming a student assistant in the Social Work Office. This role allows students to support faculty and staff with administrative tasks, event planning, and resource coordination, while building professional skills in a collaborative environment

Serving in student government provides a platform to advocate for student needs, influence university policies, and represent the social work student body in broader campus discussions.

Social work students can deepen their academic and professional development by becoming research assistants. This role offers hands-on experience working with faculty on research projects related to social issues, policy analysis, program evaluation, and more.

Community Placement & Practicums

Through required experiential coursework, BASW and MSW students have the opportunity to connect and apply theoretical concepts in the community with the benefit of reflective seminar curriculum led by knowledgeable faculty. Students are able to gain perspective and understanding of the challenges and strengths of organizations serving rural and Indigenous communities.
