Article on the 2 competing railroad"s being built to top their timberlands on the Eel. The Humboldt & Eel River railroad company was incorp. 11/17/1882 & their object was to construction & operate a railroad from Southport on Humboldt Bay to a point on upper Eel River. It was to be narrow gauge. The bluffs opposite Eagle Prairie presented a serious obstacle, about a mile in length. Only a bridge over the Van Duzen is regid. , near where the county road now crosses. The bridge will have a 250 feet span and have a half mile of trestle approaches. 80 laborers are doing the grading of the railroad. next year the grade will be completed from Singley's Ferry to timber on Eel RIver. After reconsidering, subsequent events caused them to make grade wide enough to handle standard gauge. After reconsideration, they decided to change their base shipping point from Southport Landing to the South Spit with terminal points at Table Bluff and Eureka. The plan was to run the railroad long the South Spit, then by means of a trestle 1800' feet long, run over to Buhne's Point; thence across the marsh to Eureka.
