"Archaeologist Loud Will conclude work on the Island" "Finds 300 Artifacts in Mound" Loud excavated 15 skeletons and 300 artifacts from the mound at the north end of Gunther's Island. He spent 6 weeks excavating the mound. He spent an additional six weeks journeying up Mad River, Little River, Eel River and around the bay locating ~ 100 village sites. He collected many arrow heads and sinkers. He came to Humboldt County 3 months ago and now most returch to UC Berkeley. The skeletons were found in beds of charcoal. the mound is composed of 50% scallops and 50% clam shells. He did not find any razorback clam shells in the mound. Today (1913) he notes there are no scallops in Humboldt Bay.
