Text: Lines of the Times . Oct. 8, 1881 The COE has been devoting time studying the entrance to Humboldt Bay. Colonel Medall was here during this week. Over the past 15 years the sand has piled up on the North Spit, extending the spit a mile to the south. Many years ago the ships used to enter the bay near where the lighthouse now stands. He concluded if the sand spit was kept in its present position and not allowed to extend further south. The channel across the bar would remain in the same place.
