Mrs. Gertrude Connick, (daughter of John Woodcock Cooper) wrote that "Dunbar D. Averill built a spur from the Daby, Deming and Walker railroad about 1854, beginning where the Scott House now stands [SE corner of 6th & I], running around south of Arcata, following up the gulch east of Frank Graham's house [east end of 9th] to the mill [Titlow Mill] which was built in 1852-1853, near where the 11 street bridge spans the gulch." The gulch to the east ofthe Frank Graham house must have followed northerly along B street to the Titlow Mill which was located between 10th and 11th and A & C streets. The 1933 map of Arcata shows a creek flowing from the north of the mill from the Arcata Community Park- i.e. Campbell Creek. At 11th and B Campbell creek divides, the smaller branch following down B street & the larger down between B & C streets.
