In describing the vegetation he says as far down as Weitchpec the slopes nearest the river are covered with Oaks, while higher up pine & fir. Below Weitchpec the river turns NW with forests on the west slope and a dense growth of ferns, interspersed with a little grass on steep slopes and trees along the streams.
