Text: The new county jail was being rushed through to completion in 1908. On Aug 22, 1908, there was a huge celebration in Petrolia marking the completion of the wharves and docks at the mouth of the Mattole by the Stewarts and their associates in the Mattole Lumber Company. Nat Ellery, a state highway commission member announced that a wagon road would be constructed between Eureka and Weaverville. Eventually the road was built but it will not be until 1935 that a fast route through to the Pacific Highway will be done.
