Text: Dunbar Duncan Averell died in Arcata at 96. He was Arcata's oldest citizen. He arrived in Hum. bay in 1850 aboard the ship named Emily Farnum. Before that he was a member of the party of men aboard the schooner Poragon that ran up the coast searching for the mouth of the Trinity River. That schooner was wrecked at Crescent City. He came west in June 1848. In 1850 he came directly to Union town, did some mining on the Trinity, returned to Arcata and with some other men, built the first sawmill.
