Acquisition Information

This collection was received via donation by COMPASS in 2024. These items were donated by COMPASS Director Dr. Nievita Bueno Watts and Native Student Advisor and LSAMP Coordinator Nanette Durbin, MEd.

Biographical Information

In 1974, the Native American Career Education in Natural Resources (NACENR) program was founded with the goal to serve first generation and low-income students. In 1991 the program was absorbed into a larger program titled, Indian Natural Resources, Science & Engineering Program (INRSEP). In 2024, COMPASS was established and currently facilitates eight programs, including but not limited to: INRSEP, the CSU-STEM Pathways and Research Alliance (CSU-SPaRA), the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine Scholars Program (CIRM), and the McNair Scholars Program.

The initial goal of this evolving program was to facilitate a pathway for Native American students to engage with the Natural Sciences. Seeing a gap in Native American professionals working in Natural Resources careers and agencies, NACENR originally sought to encourage indigenous students to study and prepare for a successful career in Natural Resources. The idea was to promote responsiveness from Natural Resources agencies to the indigenous perspective in resource management and hire Native Americans into positions of leadership, both within American Indian communities and in federal, state and private resource management.
