Text: Oldtimers gathered at Freshwater Park for a reunion. Lawrence F. Puter, speaker of the day, recalled early history of the highway system. He believes that the late ex-governor Gillette was the father of the state highway. In the early 1890s Gillette envisioned when a great highway would run from Canada to Mexico through California. When he was elected governor he signed the bills that started the vast movement of good roads.
