Text: John M. Hines visited Eureka for the first time since he left in 1866. He noted in 1866 one would hardly dare to walk to the present site of Sequoia Park. When a steamer came into Humboldt Bay, everyone showed up at the wharf to welcome it. There was a cattle corral where the courthouse now stands. His father built the old catholic convent at 7th and F (site of Eureka Inn).
