Text: Lines of the Times - Article in the Oct. 20, 1892 paper states that Willian Vance had a sand mining machine at Big Lagoon for some months. It got wiped out by big surf a week ago. One of the features was utilizing the tailings to run the water wheel. The machine had been running for 8 days. One dark stormy night he noted the surf roared. He went down to the beach and saw the surf was rolling clear across the spit into the lagoon.
